Diverging Diamond Interchange

Township of Spring; Berks County, PA

Diverging Diamond Interchange Berks County PA, Traffic Engineering
The Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), is an interchange design that combines left turning traffic with through traffic. This innovative design will be able to successfully handle current and increased traffic volumes as the area continues to be developed.

BEI is in the process of designing this interchange for Tower Health. The project will assist the Reading Hospital and Medical Center in serving the surrounding communities with their 103-acre site located along Broadcasting Road. The proposed DDI's location will be located at Broadcasting Road and the US Route 222 interchange.

Careful consideration and detailed traffic analysis has been completed in this area regarding the proposed DDI. Once approved and constructed, the Diverging Diamond Interchange will:
  • Increase capacity by approximately 40%
  • Minimize crashes by approximately 50%
  • Increase mobility
  • Reduce costs of construction
  • Reduce vehicular back-up

Traffic Impact Study & Highway Occupancy Permit Design Experience

  • Point of access study and traffic impact study for 15 intersections and 3 interchanges analyzed to evaluate a new interchange design. BEI is on the leading edge of the Diverging Diamond Interchange design process.

  • Update Penn Street in Reading, Pennsylvania to facilitate the opening of a 12-Story parking garage and the DoubleTree Hotel across from the convention center.

  • Numerous medical office buildings that required traffic services, ADA ramps, parking, and impact studies.

  • Traffic studies and analyses and Hiway Occupancy Permits, surveys for over 40 Dollar General locations.
  • Miles of utility upgrades and replacements for underground facilities for water, sewer, and gas.

  • SR 0230 (Main Street) and Wood Street in Dauphin County for a housing project near Penn State Campus.

  • Point of access, traffic study, and Highway Occupancy Permit for revising an interchange for a large medical center along route 222.

  • Design for multiple roundabouts located in Lancaster County and Berks County Pennsylvania. BEI is leading the way for private owners installing roundabouts in the state of Pennsylvania.

Signal Design Experience

Post Acute Facility Reading PA, Traffic Signal Design, Traffic Engineering
  • Area-wide City of Reading traffic study to evaluate the progression of traffic concerns, safety concerns and how to improve the system.

  • 110 unit hospital that needed signal improvements and physical turn lanes and improvements to interchange area to facilitate traffic.

  • Route 61 updating traffic signal for a county-wide school bus depot.

  • Updated corridor signals for a college campus to improve pedestrian safety and mobility for motorists.

  • Corridor upgrades for multiple signals contained in a closed loop spread spectrum radio system.

  • Inserting a new traffic signal into a traffic adaptive system on route 611 and upgrading ambulance station flasher signal.
